Installing HEIF Image Extensions
On Windows 10 version 18.09 or later, install the HEIF Image Extensions tool from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC files. The HEIC and HEVC tools available on the Microsoft Store allow you to open and edit HEIC images in Adobe Photoshop on Windows. On macOS, open them with Preview or Photoshop. HEIC utilizes HEVC encoding to compress images, and it is Apple’s standard format developed by the MPEG group.
Disabling HEIC Mode
To remove the HEIC mode:
- Go to Settings
- Select Camera
- Choose Formats
- Switch from HIGH EFFICIENCY to MOST COMPATIBLE
- Photos will be in JPEG format, easy to open on a computer.
Reasons for HEIC Format Usage
HEIC, introduced by Apple in 2017, uses less space than JPEG while providing higher image quality. Apple adopted the HEIC format for its devices due to its ability to store high-quality images while occupying less space. The compression and image quality of HEIC are superior to JPEG, notably with transparency and better dynamic range management.
